Your building's water test does not describe your apartment

Lead enters at the end of the line, from your branch, your supply hoses and your own fixtures. Two units on one riser can read very differently.

Apartment lead testing

Lead in Water Testing Inside Apartments and Condominiums

In a multi unit property, lead enters closest to the tap. The branch line serving a unit, the supply hoses beneath its sinks and the fixtures within it are the components most directly responsible for what a household receives.

Olympian Water Testing provides professional lead in water testing for residents, families, boards and managing agents throughout New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

Why a Building Result and a Unit Result Differ

Two apartments served by the same riser can return different values, because their fixtures differ in age and their patterns of use differ in how long water stands still.

Stagnation is the dominant variable for anything the plumbing contributes, which is why a unit level assessment answers the question a household is actually asking.

Where Lead Enters Within a Unit

Lead enters through contact with plumbing components that contain it, including lead tin solder at pipe joints and brass throughout the supply path.

Lead is found today in components such as well pump and booster pump wetted components, ball and gate valves on domestic hot and cold isolation, faucet cartridge housings and stems, brass pipe fittings including tees, elbows, couplings, unions and adapters, hose bibbs and exterior spigots, water heater nipples and relief valves, faucet bodies in kitchens and bathrooms, tub and shower mixing valves, backflow preventers and pressure reducing valves. Fixtures sold as lead free return measurable lead when tested, which is why assessment does not turn on a construction date.

What a Resident Can Arrange

Sampling at the taps inside a unit can generally be arranged with the client's cooperation alone, covering the kitchen where feeds are prepared and the bathroom where a child is bathed.

Our sampling technicians perform the site visit, requesting a stagnation period from the client where the parameter requires one.

Understanding Our Reporting

Our reporting identifies each sampling point within the unit, the method applied, the reporting limit and the measured concentration.

Common questions

What water concerns do doulas and expecting families commonly ask about?
Lead, private-well safety, bacteria and broader drinking-water quality are common questions, especially in older homes or when a family is moving or preparing for a newborn.
Can drinking water be tested during pregnancy without waiting for a problem?
Yes. Testing can be preventive and informational, providing current laboratory data about the water used in the home.
What should be tested in an older apartment before a baby arrives?
Lead is often a priority, while other parameters depend on the water source, plumbing history and any specific taste, odor, color or environmental concern.
Can a building-wide water issue be separated from a single-apartment issue?
Comparing samples from selected apartments, common areas and other points in the plumbing system can help determine whether a finding appears localized or broader.
